He's half a world a way near West Africa, and I'm here in Australia... Together we looked at everything from the strategic challenges he has to face ... to the challenges he has with stakeholders ... and reporting to the board. Compound it by the stress of negotiating with major institutional investors ready to... 
Invest $50 To $100 Million Dollars!
Simon crosses paths with heavy hitters.  They have the ability to put big money into his operation... one wrong move, and the deal falls through.  

Talk about pressure!  

The stress comes at him from all sides.  

Think about it... he's got to work through challenges with the people IN his business.  Imagine the uphill battle of influencing all those people to get on board with your strategic plan... This is what Simon deals with day in and day out. 

Compound it by the cultural challenges in the organization... and ... the issues of local council, local government, and federal governments in different parts of the of the world. 

It all rests on Simon's shoulders.  

What we've been doing is looking at all these challenges on his plate.  We put them all down on a list, and it might surprise you to know we listed ...
97 Different Challenges!
Understand, many these challenges come at him simultaneously. 

Bottom line... 

It's a tricky, and complex job. 

After we completed the list and were reviewed it, I asked him...

"Hey, listen, mate...

"Imagine for a moment I'm going to give you a silver bullet. And this silver bullet will solve any one challenge you have... It'll take anything off your plate..."
"What Would YOUR Silver Bullet Solve?"
I say, "Mate, any issue you've got, right... it can fix. It can give you $10 million dollars in cold hard cash. It can fix a bad relationship with a government. It can fix any single thing you want in your business.... And you only get one... 

I continued... 

"What one problem would you have the Silver Bullet solve so it has the biggest impact to reduce your stress level?  To make your life easier?  To get the job done?

"What would this Silver Bullet need to do to avoid embarrassment?  To break company records?  To achieve your goals and meet your deadlines ahead of schedule (and under budget)... or ... to bring future security?"

Simon thought about it for quite a while. 

What do you suppose his answer was?

Was it more capital and resources?  How about faster travel?  

His response shocked me... 

"Greg," he said, "ultimately, what I would do with a magic bullet is...
"I Would Unite and Align My Team." 
He continued... 

"I would unite and align everyone who reports to me. From the guys who run the mines to the people who work together to get it all done.  This union would be direct reports and those two or three underneath me in the business."

This hunk of silver could give him $10 million bucks... 

and... Simon wouldn't take it.

Of all the possibilities, Simon chose a High Performance Team who is... "united on strategy, and is accountable to and aligned with each other in the way they operate." 

It could have been reversing an embarrassing situation... or... removing a particular trouble maker holding him back. 

"Once the team is aligned," he said.  "Once we're operating and leading in the same way, all those other problems vanish, and anything is achievable.  Without the united and aligned team, everything else is much harder."

So that's what he took... his silver bullet... A united and aligned team with a common cause and a common leadership process. And with it... Simon believes he can solve some of the most difficult, complex, challenging, risky, and expensive issues he faces today.
